Author Ana Homayoun outlines simple ways to keep kids learning during summer break.

Create Comics

Have kids create a comic strip. This works on artistic creativity, humor, fine motor skills and writing skills. New technology does not always give children the ability to practice their hand/eye coordination and writing skills. Activities like these help children utilize their penmanship and fine motor skills in a fun way.

Plan a Weekly Outdoor Outing

If you live in an area near hills and trails, have your kids get online or use hiking books to create a weekly place they want to explore. Set aside a half day, and have them work with you to plan the journey. Have them pick places (if you have several kids, they can each rotate a week) and get involved with all stages of planning, such as getting directions, finding ticket prices, and planning lunches.

Get Kids in the Kitchen

Have your kids pick their favorite breakfast, lunch and dinner and teach them how to make the recipe. Choose something challenging but not overwhelming. Even simple staples, like spaghetti sauce, pancakes and lasagna can be used as a learning opportunity. The goal should be to make it on their own (with parent supervision if the stove or oven is involved). Then they can create a recipe box with all their favorite creations. When they write the recipe down, it encourages them to practice their handwriting in a fun way.

I'm definitely going to make a mural with my son. Thanks Lisa!

Another great idea is to make a mural. Get one of those big roles of construction paper and use washable markers. My two daughters and I made one for every season last year (they drew their favorite things to do in that season). And this year, I've been putting one up at a time and changing it when the season changes. They roll up and are really easy to store.
